The Woodstock Fire Department held its eighth annual 2-mile hike up Overlook Mountain on Sept. 11, honoring first responders on the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

The hike commemorated firefighters’ ascent through the World Trade Center towers during the rescue effort. The New York City Fire Department lost 343 firefighters that day.

Woodstock Fire Commissioner Evan Holland opened the day by reading Billy Collins’ poem “The Names,” which incorporates the names of 9/11 victims.

Hikers observed moments of silence at 8:46 a.m. and 9:03 a.m., the times the planes struck the North and South towers, respectively. Members of the West Hurley, Phoenicia, Olive, Sawkill, and Centerville fire departments joined Woodstock for this year’s hike.
