The former site of the Mud Club and Early Terrible on Mill Hill Road, now home to the cafe Gemela, is on the market for $4 million, the latest potential shift for dining and drinking options in central Woodstock.
“We love Woodstock—we love the hell out of this town,” said Nicolas Ballinger, who has owned the Gemela property with his father and brother since 2017. “We wanted to give someone the opportunity to come in. It’s an amazing property.”
While Gemela will stay in business, under a long-term lease from co-owner Craig Leonard, the Dec. 1 listing comes about a month after Chris Constant of West Hurley, his sister Jennifer Ahearn of Woodstock, and their brother James Constant of Saugerties put their Woodstock Pub up for sale for $1.8 million. Further up the street, Bearsville owner Lizzie Vann aims to redevelop the former site of the Woodstock Library into apartments and a public park.
Leonard declined to comment on any potential plans for the former gas station, adjacent to Gemela, that he also owns. He’s also a co-owner of Silvia, the restaurant across the street, and of Good Night, a pan-Asian restaurant on Rock City Road. Leonard said the Gemela lease won’t be affected should the property be sold.
Ballinger said his family is focusing on a new endeavor on Broome Street in New York City. That space is another Early Terrible, home to a nightclub and 45-seat restaurant, and another Mud Club, home to a cafe with seating for 10 that serves wood-fired bagels, organic espreseso and grab-and-go goods.
