More than 100 people lined the streets of Tannersville on an overcast Memorial Day as a solemn procession sponsored by American Legion Bunt-Brewer Post 165 made its way through the village to pay tribute to fallen service members.

“We honor the veterans who never made it home from war, as well as those who returned and have since been called to a higher duty,” said Post 165 Commander Jim Jones, whose group organized the annual event along with the Village and Town of Hunter and helped install banners on Main Street honoring local veterans or fallen veterans.

“I am deeply grateful to be part of a community that shows such respect and appreciation for our veterans.”

Village Mayor Lee McGunnigle also offered his gratitude.

“I have the deepest appreciation for the Bunt-Brewer post for their dedication for the remembrance of fallen armed service members,” he said. “The village is dedicated to respectfully support this day of remembrance. It warms my heart that the young people and their families came out to pay their respects and appreciate what Memorial Day is really about.”

Town of Hunter Supervisor Sean Mahoney echoed that sentiment in a Memorial Day Facebook post. “It was a beautiful tribute to those we’ve lost,” he posted.

The Village of Tannersville offered a free barbecue meal at Village Hall following the ceremony.

Post 165 is seeking members, Jones said. In partnership with the seven other posts in Greene County, it’s organizing a target shoot in August for county veterans.
