Kelly Sinclair often brings her camera when walking in nature, but Overlook Mountain is a special inspiration. “I take images that move me,” Sinclair said. “It’s not exactly planned or rational. I photograph as I go. But I hope to convey the journey up the mountain and the features that move me; the trail itself, the pool of cold, clear spring water, the resting rock halfway, the wind-twisted trees, the amazing ruins of the hotel.”
One of her most memorable experiences photographing Overlook was reaching the summit during changing weather. “It can be calm and clear when you start, and by the time you reach the overlook, it can be wild and windy, and you can literally be in the clouds,” she said. “I love the rainy, misty days when the fog envelopes everything, and on clear days, the view can literally make me gasp.”
Sinclair hopes that her photos inspire visitors to care more for the mountain. “I hope people come away with more respect for the mountain and take more care not to litter,” she said. “Please don’t leave your plastic water bottles and dog waste bags along the trail!”
Her photo exhibit, Overlook Reflections, opens Friday, April 4, from 5-7 p.m. at the James Cox Gallery in Woodstock, and will be on display until May 2.
