Lee McGunnigle is no stranger to Tannersville’s local government. The former mayor, who narrowly lost his 2023 bid by a single vote, is running again—this time against Deputy Mayor David Kashman.
McGunnigle, running as an Independent on the Friends of Tannersville ticket, said his campaign is driven by concerns over stalled projects and a lack of follow-through from the current administration.
“I have the time and the experience to get things done,” McGunnigle said. “And I know how to work with the state to make sure Tannersville benefits.”
During his previous tenure, McGunnigle helped secure millions in grant funding, including the $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant. If elected, he plans to push forward delayed projects, such as sidewalk improvements, solar initiatives, and lakefront revitalization efforts.
McGunnigle also wants the village to implement a short-term rental law, similar to the Town of Hunter’s, with input from local property owners. Additionally, he said updating Tannersville’s comprehensive plan would help guide smart growth while maintaining the village’s character.
“A lot of people move here for the peace and beauty of the area,” he said. “Development needs to be intentional and transparent.”
He criticized what he sees as inaction from the current administration, particularly in advancing state-funded projects and engaging with residents.
“You have to be a squeaky wheel with New York State,” he said. “If you’re not pushing, things don’t move.”
McGunnigle’s campaign will focus on community engagement, fiscal accountability, and infrastructure improvements. He plans to hold public forums in the coming weeks to hear from residents directly.
The election will take place on March 18 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Village Hall,5974 Main Street. Absentee ballot information is available through the Greene County Board of Elections at greenegovernment.com.
