Bruce Ackerman!

So full of life!  So full of creativity!

As the great Phil Ochs once sang about a fallen president

“A man so full of life, even death was caught off guard.”

Bruck Ackerman!

Excellent artist. Fine musician.  He built

such beautiful guitars for his friends and loved ones!

He was a excellent graphic designer

He designed the logo for Fugs Records

and the poster for our 1994 reunion at the Byrdcliffe Guild:

Bruce’s Design for 1994 Fugs Concert. Photo courtesy of Ed Sanders.

And a wonderful painter: Miriam and I have in

our Woodstock house a beautiful painting Bruce

made of one of our pet ducks!!

And always, decades upon decades Bruce exuded friendship and

good will.  For years I saw him around noon

walking on Tinker St to another lunch appointment

Always with a smile and an outstretched hand.

But at the same time Bruce was also famous in Woodstock

for his Caricatures of local politicians and activists

in the Woodstock Times, at which the victim,

would gulp, shudder, and praise him for his

artistry and wit!

He was a fine singer and performer, and a good father.

He was married to Barbara Boyce and they had a relationship

that lasted all all all all all the Way onward!

Bruce Ackerman, long may you dwell in the history

of Woodstock, and in our minds!!

Ed Sanders is a poet, historian, and founding member of the Fugs. He and his wife Miriam, a writer and painter, have lived in Woodstock for 50 years. Ed chaired the committee that drafted the town’s current zoning law and remains active in civic and creative life. Some of his papers and writings are archived at Princeton University, including thousands of glyphs.
