Windham Supervisor Tom Hoyt won reelection Tuesday, defeating Democrat Connor Exum after a bitter campaign that boiled over at a Town Board meeting when Hoyt tore up a newspaper and threw the pieces at his challenger over an ad criticizing the town’s review of a proposed luxury hotel.

In Ulster County, Democrat Kate Leon unseated Republican incumbent Jason Kovacs in Legislature District 3, which includes parts of Saugerties, Ulster, and Kingston. Shandaken Deputy Supervisor Robert Drake, a Democrat, also won a county legislative seat and will move from the Town Board to represent District 22, which includes Olive, Shandaken, Denning, and Hardenburgh.

Shandaken Supervisor Barbara Mansfield, Woodstock Supervisor Anula Courtis, Saugerties Supervisor Fred Costello, Olive Supervisor Jim Sofranko, Hurley Supervisor Michael Boms and Hurley Clerk and Tax Collector Lynne Bailey, all Democrats, were also reelected. Hunter Supervisor Sean Mahoney won another term on the Democratic, Republican and Conservative ballot lines.

Gov. Kathy Hochul, Rep. Pat Ryan, Attorney General Letitia James, State Sen. Michelle Hinchey and Assemblymember Sarahana Shrestha also held their seats. Their victories came amid a national Democratic wave. CBS News projected that Democrats had recaptured both the House and Senate, setting the stage for an end to Republicans’ unified control of Washington and new checks on President Donald Trump’s administration.
