A 15-year-old was charged with murder on Sunday in connection with the death of a woman in West Camp, Saugerties police said Monday.

The teen, whose name was not released, was charged with second-degree murder, a felony, after police received a report of possible homicide in the hamlet during an investigation into a reported homicide around 1 p.m. Sunday, June 7.

Police said the victim was an adult woman but did not release her name or additional details, citing the ongoing investigation.

The teen was arraigned in Saugerties Town Court, sitting in the Youth Part of Superior Court, and remanded to a secure facility without bail, the police said in a statement.

Police said additional charges are expected.

Saugerties police were assisted by state police, the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office, and the Ulster County Child Advocacy Center.

Unlike other states where first-degree implies a premeditated or planned killing, New York State penal law states first-degree murder requires an intentional killing combined with specific, legally defined aggravating “special circumstances.” Second-degree murder is a baseline charge for standard intentional killings or deaths resulting from extreme-recklessness.
